The new powers of abstraction permit an understanding of relations with unknown humans -- in other words, the concept of society is mastered. Experiences with other individuals and small groups should be continued and intensified (in fact, they will be, with or without help from educators); additionally, experience in various roles with large systems (where one is expected to cooperate with unknown individuals) should be provided. Work (volunteer or paid) in political, business, student and volunteer organizations can help the student reformulate the small system competencies of middle childhood into intellectual concepts and moral principles such as autocracy, democracy, communism, capitalism, beauty, truth, justice and love.

As with the physical sciences, the adolescent can use deductive reasoning and experimental inquiry to develop large system competencies. Student governments and clubs provide excellent opportunities to test and practice leadership qualities.
