opf911	One of the most dramatic changes in the life of a human is marked by the physical, emotional, sexual, social, and cognitive changes that mark the transition into adolescence. Focusing on the cognitive changes for the moment, adolescence tends to mark the transition from concrete operations to formal operations. New powers of abstraction and deduction arise. One is able to think in terms of distant times and places, of systems of people, and of principles of nature and morality.
opf912	Subject matters in school can be approached in a scientific manner. Laboratory education can lead to the formation and testing of hypotheses. Memorization of theorems and formulae should be eschewed in favor of more active learning that can provide a firmer base for technological competence and innovation.
